The proposal for the new Biassono Primary School reinterprets the educational building as a civic and landscape infrastructure. It is designed to regenerate a currently underutilized site, transforming it into a vibrant hub where city, nature, and community converge. Its strategic location offers a unique opportunity to establish a new urban hub, extending the existing network of green spaces and public services while creating an open, inclusive, and permeable environment built to be activated throughout the day.
Rather than a conventional educational facility, the school evolves into a true civic hub where academic, cultural, recreational, and athletic activities coexist within an integrated, shared framework. A seamless network of walkways, public squares, and open landscapes encourages intergenerational encounters, fostering social interaction and strengthening the bond between the school and the wider neighborhood.
The masterplan is structured around a sequenced transition from the public realm to the school’s more intimate spaces, ensuring safety, accessibility, and spatial continuity. Over half of the site is dedicated to permeable open spaces, parks, learning gardens, community orchards, and shared sports facilities, where the landscape serves as an active tool for both education and daily community life.
The architectural layout is organized around a large, central green courtyard—the ecological and social heart of the campus—which infuses the entire complex with natural light, visual connections, and spatial depth. Shared facilities, including the auditorium, sports hall, and cafeteria, are expressed as distinct, recognizable volumes with independent public access, allowing them to host community events outside of school hours. The new school is thus conceived as an open, flexible, and sustainable living system where architecture, landscape, and public space merge into a unified vision, fostering inclusion, a sense of belonging, and a new civic landmark for Biassono.
